Each fall, The Great Northwest
Basketball League organizes a state-wide tournament for Wisconsin’s top-ranked
7th and 8th grade girls community-based teams. This tournament is the natural
spin-off of the Wisconsin State Invitational Championship Tournament (WSICT)
that a majority of the sixteen teams attending the Fall Classic for each grade
participated in last spring. The Fall Classic matches the strongest teams
from each of the WSICT divisions. The tournament field is pooled to allow
Wisconsin’s best medium and small community teams the opportunity to play the
best Division 1 teams in the state. The field for each of the Fall
Classics is stronger than the WSICT fields because the best Division 2, 3 and 4
teams are typically stronger than the bottom half of the Division 1 tournament
at last season’s WSICT. The Great Northwest does not organize a similar
event for 7th and 8th grade boys teams because the confluence of middle school
football and basketball seasons makes coming up with a suitable early-season
date virtually impossible.
